Course Details
Presented by Aron Downie, this presentation details how the evidence based approach to care is dependent on the contemporaneous update of management strategies and clinical guidelines to reflect research findings.
Diagnostic triage initiates a clinical pathway that is often dependent on the presence of red flags suggestive of serious pathology. Investigating the ‘red flags pathway’ identifies that the majority of red flags presented in guidelines lack empirical evidence to support their use, resulting in increased concern for patients and an increased utilization of imaging and diagnostic studies.
Ultimately, diagnostic triage will classify around 90% of LBP patients as having non-specific low back pain. Trajectory studies look to define characteristics that may impact the course of non-specific low back pain. Persistently high pain is associated with high pain intensity at onset, prior episodes of low back pain, reduced quality of life and cases involving Workers Compensation. Management for non-specific low back pain patients should include advice to stay active, use manual therapy as required, and avoid bed rest.
