Summary and Learning Outcomes
Discover how to move beyond a narrow, pain-focused model of care and discover the power of Values-Based Rehabilitation (VBR) in your clinical practice. This module equips you with the tools to help people living with persistent pain reconnect with what truly matters to them- whether that’s returning to sport, spending quality time with family, or thriving at work. Through engaging teaching, assessment and real-world case-based questions, you will learn how to explore patient/client values, formulate and break down measurable goals, and apply graded exposure strategies that foster confidence and resilience. You will also gain clarity on the role and importance of acceptance in persistent pain. Designed for musculoskeletal professionals across varied backgrounds and clinical settings, this module will enhance your ability to deliver person-centred, evidence-informed care, that improves participation in meaningful life activities and quality of life in people living with persistent pain.
Learning Outcomes:
After this module, learners will:
1. To be able to describe the core principles of Values-Based Rehabilitation (VBR) and how VBR differs from a pain-control (symptom-focused) approach.
2. To be able to distinguish the difference between a value and a goal, and be able translate a person’s values into goals that prioritise meaningful activity and function.
3. To be able to distinguish a VBR approach from various other options that may present in a consultation and/or when discussing a management plan for a person with persistent pain.
4. To be able to identify how acceptance-based strategies (e.g. reducing avoidance, graded exposure, pacing) support engagement in valued activities despite ongoing pain.
